I’m Karl Joachim Brende, an economic historian and currently Visiting Research Fellow and Research Assistant at BI Norwegian Business School. I completed my Master’s degree in History at the University of Oslo under the supervision of Professor Einar Lie.

My research investigates private non-bank mortgage credit, informal credit, banking and financial history of Scandinavia. With a focus on the evolution of early financial instruments such as bills of exchange, mortgages, trade credit, and bonds. I employ quantitative and interdisciplinary methods, including social network analysis, econometrics, machine learning, and OCR. With the goal to understand how these relationships and financial instruments shaped past economic and social life.
